Welcome to my woodcraft projects page.
All projects are created on a per order basis. If there is a particular scroll saw project that you would like made but do not see it here then contact me and I will either buy the appropriate pattern or make one myself. Patterns can be found on many web sites including those in my 'links' section. If you find one you like then let me know which web site it's from and the product name and number then I'll give you a price quote and a time estimate for the project.
Custom portraits
can be made from most photos for $40.00 each.
There will be a $10.00 charge for each additional person in the photo.
Additional copies from the same photo are $25.00 each.
Photo scanning and manipulation (pattern only) is $25.00.
Custom fretwork projects can also be ordered. This could be anything from a minor variation to an existing pattern to a full custom made pattern. Prices will vary depending on the size of the change and the complexity of the finished work.
Please allow sufficient time after ordering for me to create your project. Once your project has been completed I will notify you to let you know that it's on the way.
Most prices given here are quoted much less than the prices given by other woodcraft artists. If you do happen to find a finished project elsewhere for less, given that it is of equal value and quality, please let me know and I'll beat their price!
Intarsia - where art meets woodworking.
Intarsia is the craft of using varied shapes, sizes and species of wood fitted together to create an almost 3-D inlaid, mosaic-like picture. It is thought that the word "intarsia" is derived from the Latin word "interserere" which means "to insert" and that it was originally developed in Siena, Italy in the 13th century by crafters using inlays of ivory inserted in wood as well as inlays of wood inserted into wall murals, table tops and other furniture.
Today, intarsia is created by selecting different types of wood, using its natural grain patterns and colors (rather than dyes and stains) to create the different colors in the pattern. Each piece of wood is then individually crafted by cutting, shaping, sanding, and finishing before fitting them together like a jig saw puzzle and gluing them to a piece of 1/4" plywood backing cut to the shape of the final product. Sometimes, additional pieces of plywood are used to 'raise' areas of the pattern to create more depth. Once together, a final layer of finish is applied and the project is complete.

Fretwork - the art of scroll sawing.
Fretwork is a detailed picture made out of finely cut openings patterned into a piece of thin wood. It was originally crafted by hand using a coping saw and files but since the development of the scroll saw in the 1920's, pieces are created much easier and faster than ever before. Most modern fretwork can be found as intricate patterns on clocks, shelves, and tables, as well as silhouettes cut into individual wall plaques but forms of fretwork overlays can be traced back as far as 3000 years ago as found on furniture in Egyptian tombs.
To create a fretwork project a pattern must be applied to the wood and then pilot holes drilled into each place that needs to be cut into the piece. The blade must be removed from the saw, threaded through the pilot hole, and then reattached for each cut.
